California property tax payments were due on April 10th, 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic may have affected your ability to pay your tax bill if you are responsible for making the payment directly to the county.

If COVID-19 caused you to not make your payment on time, you may be able to apply for cancellation of the penalties assessed on your Second Installment of Property Taxes. If your property tax payments are impounded with your mortgage payment, you likely are not in this situation.

TOP THREE THINGS YOU CAN DO NOW

  1. Visit your county treasurer tax collector’s website. You can find a list of all California counties here and links to their COVID-19 cancellation forms for each of the individual Tax Collectors by clicking here.
  2. Collect the necessary information requested by your county in order to prove your COVID-19 hardship. NOTE: Most counties require you to make your full second installment payment with your application for relief.
  3. If you have questions about your application, call your county’s treasurer tax collector office or schedule an appointment with our office.

If you want additional information about how to avoid paying a penalty on your property taxes or if you have additional real estate law questions, please reach out to our office. We look forward to hearing from you.
